Vincente Minnelli dares to go behind the scenes to show what goes beyond the bright lights of Hollywood. To show the way it works. It shows you the unreal and fantasy world of Hollywood beyond the hype.

This movie owes a great deal to Citizen Kane in the way it uses flashbacks to tell the story about its main character. Jonathan Shields played by Kirk Douglas is a Hollywood producer looking to make his comeback after failing to direct a picture himself. Kirk Douglas really does drive home this character.

Lana Turner is just wonderful and enchanting as ever. She is just an amazing and talented lady that does give us one of her finest hours in acting driving home her role so great. Lana turner in the scenes with Douglas crackle with dynamic energy. She really shows you what an amazing actress she was in this movie.

Barry Sullivan gives a nice performance as Shields’s early friend who is soon left by the wayside.Walter Pidgeon does a good job as Pebbel, who gives the slick-talking young Shields his first real job in the movies, and Pidgeon projects his usual air of calm authority. Dick Powell is also excellent as Bartlow, the cynical and jaded author. Gloria Grahame took home the Best Supporting Actress Oscar for her role as Rosemary, even though she’s only onscreen for 9 minutes. But it’s an excellent performance that really shines even if it is short. I would say it’s acting is just outstanding as Vincente Minnelli really drives home such great acting out of his cast.  The acting in “The Bad and the Beautiful” is superb, with strong performances from all of the leads that it crackles.

I had remarked it was like citizen kane in its story. It uses flashbacks quite good to tell a story. Its story is melodrama at its finest form. I would say it really is a good story the seedy side of hollywood. Remember not all of hollywood is such nice and good and wholesome. It really shows that here in full force.

Vincente Minnelli’s direction really does use such great levels of flashbacks to tell about his main lead. I can say he directs his cast to do their roles to perfection. I often heard he was quite tough about getting the best out of his cast. He really does craft out a gem here of acting.

Cinematography is really outstanding as ever in this movie. The costumes shine greatly as Lana Turner looks amazing and shines greatly in the many outfits she is given to wear along with the rest of the cast.

Mr. Minnelli shows he wasn’t afraid to portray the industry the way we see it in the film that was quite bold to hollywood that dislikes its image being shown in such a way.It is a great classic that has everything working for it together in such a remarkable way that it crackles with great acting that make it a classic to watch anytime. One more masterpiece to watch anytime.

Lana turner  tribute

Lana turner was a wonderful actress able to do such wonderful range in her roles. She was wonderful in so many roles.  Lana will always be remembered as the self-assured, confident yet fatalistic Cora in “The Postman Always Rings Twice.” It’s no wonder the role was her personal favorite out of a long, long film career. In some way, Lana channeled her own personal turmoil into the film noir thriller and made her role all the more magnetic. She went through hell and came out the other side several times. She knew Hollywood was no bed of roses and grew stronger. So many actresses have followed in her footsteps but I think she was an absolute original in a town that is full of copycats,so it is no wonder she is a legendary actress whose roles were just as deep and complex as her personal life. Lana Turner had an acting ability that belied the “Sweater Girl” image MGM thrust upon her, and even many of her directors admitted that they knew she was capable of greatness. An original gem of an actress with a charm and talent to match. There will never be another like her ever as she was a true orginal gem
