THE PROWLER

THE PROWLER Review(https://www.facebook.com/Wolffianclassicmoviesdigest/)p36749_p_v8_aaI am a big lover of movies as i really love flim noir as it stands among my favorite type of movies to watch often. So when I found out that The Midnite Drive-In was hosting a film noir blogathon, i jumped at chance to review a classic noir classic gem. Be sure to check out other reviews form the event. Thanks to wonderful host of this event. Its time to present the review. A  Film Noir Blogathon review of the THE PROWLERFilmNoirBlogathon-Double            The Prowler was not seen for years as it now is regarded as a noir classic as this movie is regarded in the b movie tradition of movies.  The prowler flips the femme fatale formula around to great effect as its the male cop is the aka  the seducer, a cop no less, the abuse of power hanging heavy over proceedings like, yes, some “prowler” lurking in your back garden. Van Heflin plays the role of Webb Garwood in a wonderful performance as the cop who is smiten with Susan Gilvray  played wonderfully by Evelyn Keyes.  Webb Garwood is smitten with the young and attractive woman from the off, and sensing her marriage to a late night radio personality is far from happy, he sets about wooing her, obsessively. It’s the start of a coupling that is going to travel down a particularly dark road. This movie is a two character piece that is directed and crafted out by  Joseph Losey as he crafts out such a wonderfully crafted gem that flips many things of the classic noir on its head as a cop turns out to be obsessed with the person he is served to protect. Evelyn Keyes caracter is a very good homely  femme fatale that does really come to love Webb Garwood. Its a wonder she can fall for a bad guy in a way so fast but it works due to her acting. Their body language really does work well together as both do speak such without words. The Prowler  is concerned with complex social issues with wonderfully crafted acting and direction making it a noir worth watching. The prowler is a nearly forgotten noir classic that tells a tale of adultery and greed that has a cop play up the role of the dame of noir normally to twist her feelings for him as they fall in love you see the strings being pulled toward a love tale of greed and lust that makes it one classic noir gem for the ages.

  1. Look forward to checking this one out…always love Heflin and Keyes is never given her due as a fine actress–the specter of being Scarlett O’Hara’s little sister and her overpublicized love affairs (i.e.Howard Hughes) overshadowed her talents and abilities. Glad these so called B pics are just as available as the blockbusters, this is so often where the creativity and resourcefulness of these hardworking filmmakers really shines!
Great post and beautifully designed blog!!

  2. Sorry it took so long for me to finally give your review its due. But I like it. I’ve seen Van Heflin in a handful of movies, most notably with Glenn Ford in “3:10 to Yuma”. Have to find this one somewhere.
