The Shop Around the Corner(https://www.facebook.com/Wolffianclassicmoviesdigest)

So today I talk about the The Shop Around the Corner which is directed by Ernst Lubitsch whom is such a wonderful director with many wonderful classics i adore to watch often. Lubitsch’s charming masterpiece, so often imitated and re-adapted since it appeared in 1940 as its so charming and enduring to watch on screen as today i talk about why i adore this classic so much.

The Shop Around the Corner review

Ernst Lubitsch’s charming masterpiece is often imitated and re-adapted since it appeared in 1940 on the screens as it is one of those rare films that is simply perfect form beginning to end.. Margaret Sullavan and James Stewart worked in several films together over their film history on the screen as both of them give out their finest performances ever on the screen. Jimmy Stewart and Margaret Sullavan play off each other well as they are a perfect pair to watch on the screen. Frank Morgan is truly wonderful in his performance as the owner of the shop as he gives out his finest performance ever on the screen.

The Shop Around the Corner is a charming comedy gem in Ernst Lubitsch had another quiet triumph added to his credit with this lovely film as this charming little shop could be set anywhere in the world. The shop is a life microcosm with its little quiet joys and its bitter disappointments it feels very close to frank Capra in its charms you see unfold on the screen.  It is one of the sweetest and most charming of comedies all time. Everything works out perfectly in this perfect film which was often remade but never matched to same level as this marvelous classic gem.

happy 76th anniversary to dumbo

Dumbo is a favourite flim among Pixar’s brain trust as it features all the hallmarks that would characterize the studio’s own flims it has great characters  and a story full of warmth and a lot of heart. This movie turns 76 years old today as it has not only inspired countless pixar flims over the years.  Dumbo was the flim was the little flim that did big things much like dumbo  the movie’s hero as the studios past efforts of Pinocchio and Fantasia were flops upon their release as this movie was made a b-picture on cheaper budget it became a huge hit as their frist hit animated movie snice snow white.  Its a simple story of the ugly duckling retold in a new way.

Dumbo is an elephant with freakishly large ears discovers that the thing that makes him different is also the thing that makes him truly special as he can fly via them and use of a feather he holds on him. It is revealed in ending the feather is a gag as he can fly without it as his ears gave him power to fly. Dumbo is one of the studio’s greatest character creations he never utters a word or speaks in any form but you can’t help but fall in love this little guy. His relationship with his mother is beautifully captured from their playful moments during bath-time to their heartbreaking and fleeting reunion it’s all so moving and heartfelt as it does somewhat really feel so emotionally moving. In a matter of minutes you understand their love for each other their unwavering love for each other. You are fully invested in Dumbo’s own personal journey. His odd couple relationship with Timothy Mouse is equally moving whilst every cameo and he is unforgettable.

Dumbo is the shortest feature films Disney produced it arguably possesses more memorable moments than any of their other movies form this period of disney movie. from the stork delivering newborn babies which we see baby mine song playing as you feel for dumbo and its mother as both suffer so much on screen to dumbo flying in wonder on screen we see so many moments in one movie. Dumbo has some of best songs of the period compared to the cloyingly sweet music of the other Disney films made in the 1940s the songs all possess an infectious and poppy lightness such as When I See an Elephant Fly, Elephants on Parade and Song of the Roustabouts are all numbers that will be bouncing around your head for days afterwards.

Dumbo’s animation is less technically polished than the films it succeeded as it has a lightness and freedom looking more cartoony. This film is bold and bright with simple but striking watercolor backgrounds and a strong cartoon aesthetic that really draws you into its world. Dumbo has so much emotion, warmth and nuance are conveyed in the tiniest little details, particularly Dumbo as its charm can melt any heart. The animation is playful and experimental form it’s from the map view of the United States to the pink elephants there is always something always something exciting or touching in every frame of this flim to stand out for you to watch on the screen. It is films like Dumbo that made me fall in love with animation in the first place as this classic is a classic animated gem you will adore to see anytime.

I review this classic movie starring Spencer Tracy today for my friends crystal kalyana’s  BLOGATHON today.   I would advise you to check out others form THE SPENCER TRACY AND KATHARINE HEPBURN BLOGATHON  today which is hosted by a dear friend today on her blog.  I review this classic movie now for my blog.

Keeper of the Flame review

p3654_p_v8_aa

Keeper of the Flame is the second film starring the duo of Spencer Tracy and Katharine Hepburn on the screen. The first movie starring them both was woman of the year which was one amazing comedy classic. I would say many overlook keeper of the flame. Keeper of the Flame is a proto-film noir mixed gothic melodramas that foreshadowed the political paranoia genre to come on screens in years to come. Spencer Tracy’s reporter character gathers with other members of the press in a small rural inn, there to report on a vaguely described “American hero’s” funeral that has many dark seeds in this classic tale unfolds on the screen.

Kate Hepburn and Spencer Tracy make this thriller with their wonderful acting together on the screen. . The wonderful acting of Spencer Tracy and Kate Hepburn really makes this movie stand out among their movies. The supporting cast all give out wonderful performances.

This is the quintessential Spencer Tracy role for the screen. This movie is one of the best Spencer Tracy roles he ever did for the screen. George Cukor directs this classic that mixes noir elements with proto elements of political paranoia to craft a true masterpiece that you should see today.

ball of fire

I am a very huge fan of screwball comedies. I often review more screwball comedies on my blog often also I review many noir classics and talk about Hitchcock often. I would say they are my three favorite movie areas to talk about. I love fondly screwball comedies. Films definitive of the genre usually feature farcical situations, a combination of slapstick with fast-paced repartee and show the struggle between economic classes. Films definitive of the genre usually feature farcical situations, a combination of slapstick with fast-paced repartee and show the struggle between economic classes. They also generally feature a self-confident and often stubborn central female protagonist and a plot involving courtship and marriage or remarriage or cross-dressing. Some comic plays are screwball in nature. It was a genre that was made in movies until 1942. Many films of the 1950’s also have traits of screwball comedies. It is time to talk about one of my favorite movies all time now.

Ball of fire review

Howard Hawks Ball of Fire is an urban update of the Snow-White fairy-tale with an urban twist. Ball of fire was written by Billy Wilder with Howard hawks directing this movie. It remains one of the finest screwball comedies ever put to the screen.

Ball of fire remains one of my favorite screwball comedies all time. This movie has such wonderful acting by Barbara Stanwyck and Gary Cooper. The ever wonderful Barbara Stanwyck really leads the show as Sugarpuss O’Shea who hides with them for her gangster boyfriend whom she becomes best friends to them in the end. She plays the role in a very wonderful way that really charms you to watch on the screen. Barbara Stanwyck is warming up in this movie for her acting skills are truly growing as it goes along to its ending. . Gary Cooper gives us one amazing performance for the screen.

The groups of professors are all very good supporting actors as Oskar Homolka and Henry Travers and S.Z. Sakall and Tully Marshall and Leonid Kinskey and Richard Haydn and Aubrey Mather whom I would say all give out such wonderful performances on the screen. I would say Henry Travers is among cast of the stand out character actors as he played the angel its Wonderful Life as he plays such an amazing role for this movie. I would say each of these professors are played by very wonderful character actors that each give out wonderful performances. Allen Jenkins is a garbage man seeking knowledge for pecuniary gain as he gives a very good acting   performance. The movie has very wonderful acting by everyone in its cast of talents.

Dana Andrews plays against type as a gangster in one very good performance for this amazing actor of the screen as he as the gangster boyfriend of Sugarpuss O’Shea for this movie. Mary Field as Miss Totten, the daughter of the wealthy inventor who created the foundation really gives a good performance in her role. The whole of supporting cast of many great acting legends all give such wonderful performances.

Ball of Fire is one amazing classic that you should see today.

Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde

https://www.facebook.com/Wolffianclassicmoviesdigest

So today I talk about Jekyll and Mr. Hyde for The 3rd Wonderful Ingrid Bergman Blogathon today, a classic MGM horror movie that remains timeless today. I hope you check out other posts form this Blogathon today. So to review this classic movie now for my blog.

Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde review

Unlike Universal, MGM was never a studio associated much with out-and-out horror films (A notable exception: 1932’s great The Mask of Fu which is another classic movie by this classic studio. This version of the classic Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde story is more slow-moving and psychological than the other versions of this classic tale for the screen. It relies on a good cast that all give out wonderful performances. If you want horror but you will love it if you don’t mind a psychological approach.

Spencer Tracy plays the dual leading role giving it a good job of creating both personas. This movie is a perfect encapsulation of Stevenson’s original vision as Spencer Tracy gives us a closer to the book version of this evil side unleashed upon the screen. Tracy’s makeup is far less monstrous than that created for Fredric March ten years earlier but it is far better and closer to the book. Director Victor Fleming goes for exaggerations of Tracy’s features and the playing up of the psychological differences between Jekyll and Hyde. The first couple of transformations are played as dream sequences involving good girl Lana Turner and bad girl Ingrid Bergman. We don’t see the actual transformation until well on into the movie. So have big actresses like Ingrid Bergman and Lana Turner in supporting roles giving out such wonderful performances for the screen.

It is a literary-based horror/drama that has wonderful acting and a wonderful story that unfolds upon the screen. Joseph Ruttenberg’s cinematography with Cedric Gibbons’ Art Direction and Edwin B. Willis Set Direction all recreate foggy Victorian London upon the screen. It’s simply a classic gothic tale that you will adore to see anytime.
