Form silent movie legend to camp queen. Joan Crawford and her astonishing 45-year film career is the stuff of a Gatsby-esque legend of survival and reinvention. Simultaneously glorious, tragic, tawdry, and hype-filled, her story is the very embodiment of the real version of the American Dream. She is without a doubt one of the legends of the silver screen.
Joan Crawford began her career as a dancer in traveling theatrical companies before debuting as a chorine (a chorus girl) on Broadway, Crawford signed a motion picture contract with Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer in 1925. She started out with mgm in 1925. She lasted 45 years as she truly reinvented herself often. Its one of her finest hours on the screen.
Although Paul Boray (John Garfield) is a talented violinist, he comes from a poor, working-class background and doesn’t have the connections needed to make it in the music world. Woman-about-town Helen Wright (Joan Crawford) does, though, and after seeing him perform, she takes him under his wing, opening doors he couldn’t access before. Their relationship soon turns into a romantic one, but the destructive behavior of Helen may be too much for Paul to bear.(Plot info-off goggle)
Humoresque is one of the finest hours of John Garfield and Joan Crawford. I would consider The Postman Always Rings Twice to be john’s finest hour. Joan’s finest hour would go to Mildred Pierce but this is second to that movie for her acting alone.
Joan Crawford plays Helen Wright a lush married socialite woman which has traits that matches that of Joan Crawford. She plays up to her finest acting as she truly is home in this wonderful role. As Helen Joan Crawford gives us truly an Oscar level performance that should have earned her an Oscar for this wonderful role.
John Garfield is also at top of his form as he gives out such a wonderful performance that is one of his finest hours on the screen as it is such a shame he would be blacklisted so soon. He truly nails home such a fine role that should have had an Oscar nomination. Oscar Levant gives out one fine performance that truly nails home his role. The supporting cast all hail out such wonderful performances that give out such fine performances.
The music is very dreamlike and magical as it can really take away many of the movies scenes to a level that does add such depth to them. Even though little of the music, before the end, has the sensuality associated with a dream experience, the virtuoso pieces used are perfect vehicles for the ‘dreamer’ to act out his role as the center of this closed universe. He performs, and the other characters can only accompany in the sense of classical tones of the soul which the movie does in strides.
This film IS an outstanding example of the “noir” qualities which were a hallmark of the 30’s to the early 50’s from the earlier stages of talking pictures, through the depression and post-WW II years. Joan Crawford had the best of this trait of a cold woman. Its noir qualities even match with its Cinematography which does with its fine dark tones and shades of grey that adds to the noir dame level Joan plays in this fine movie. Cinematography truly shines greatly in this wonderful movie.
Humoresque is a timeless romance for cinema and music lovers. The screenplay has awesome dialogs with unforgettable lines and such wonderful Cinematography and music and acting. Its one of the finest movies you can watch anytime. So watch this classic today folks you will love it.
