TODAY i talk about The Devil and Miss Jones. It is the screwball comedy classic that frankly stands among the classics. It stars one of my favorite actresses of the golden age Jean Arthur whom frank Capra called the gem of the screen.  It is a requested review by a friend on facebook named Mike Dirienzo. So thanks so much to him for this wonderful choice. so to begin this this review.

The Devil and Miss Jones review

J.P. Merrick (Charles Coburn) is a very rich and very grumpy department store owner. When his employees decide to start unionizing, hoping to get higher pay and better conditions in the workplace, he decides to take action to stop them. Determined to find and take down the union organizers, J.P. takes a job in his own store as a shoe salesman under the name of “Mr. Higgins.”  but soon finds their grievances are genuine through Miss Jones, Merrick’s co-worker and O’Brien’s girlfriend. Eventually, Merrick leads the fight for decent rights and also finds a girl of his own. (plot form goggle)

Sam Wood (Goodbye, Mr. Chips) directs 1941’s The Devil and Miss Jones, a romantic dramedy written by Norman Krasna (Indiscreet). Charles Coburn- jean Arthur-Robert Cummings and Spring Byington stars in this comedy classic with one of my favorite intros of any classic movie, The image of a good jean contrasted to the image of Charles Coburn as the devil is just such a delight to see.

Jean Arthur really shines wonderfully in her role. She makes the role as much driven by her very strong witty charming acting and her dramatic acting. She truly does give us among her finest of hours. It may be next to Mr. Smith Goes to Washington as one of her finest roles i ever seen her play on the screen.

Charles Coburn truly shines in his role. He starred alongside jean in a few movies each of them he always matches her greatly as he feels perfectly cast in each role. He is truly a wonderful actor that always feels so charming to watch on the screen. Robert Cummings may be very much the perfect Joe as he truly makes its feel very much like the every-man in the movie. He truly is wonderful in his respective role.

Spring Byington plays a truly wonderful role. Charles Coburn stands out. His character makes the greatest personal journey from disgruntled and closed-minded to happy and loving and willing to compromise as we see by end of the movie.  Jean Arthur is also a stand-out. She lights up the screen with her natural charm and bright personality.

The subplot of union’s organization drama drives the plot forward. It’s the sharp wit and charm of its cast that brings out the magic of this wonderful gem which in part is Sam Wood’s inspired direction that brings home the magic of this special comedy classic. This comedy has a moral depth to it that is a rarity in the genre of comedy.  Jean is truly the queen of dramedy. Frank Capra was right she was jewel indeed for all ages.  It is a must see for any one that loves a good screwball comedy or a movie lover as this movie will always delight you anytime you see it.

The Princess Comes Across

https://www.facebook.com/Wolffianclassicmoviesdigest

TODAY i talk about The Princess Comes Across with a review that honors  Carole Lombard for the Carole Lombard: The Profane Angel Blogathon hosted by my good friend Crystal Kalyana Pacey  form IN THE GOOD OLD DAYS OF CLASSIC HOLLYWOOD and also hosted by Laura from Phyllis Loves Classic Movies Thanks to both wonderful hosts for hosting this event to honor this great actress and legend.  So thanks to both wonderful hosts as you can check out others form the event at both sites and thanks so much both hosts. Lets begin the honors of this wonderful legend whom is the queen of screwball comedies in my eyes.

The Princess Comes Across review(tribute to the great comedy legend)poster-princess-comes-across-the_03

THE PRINCESS COMES ACROSS (Paramount, 1936), directed by William K. Howard, based on story by Philip MacDonald and adapted from novel by Louis Lucien Rogger, reunites Carole Lombard with Fred MacMurray in their second team up on the screen after HANDS ACROSS THE TABLE (1935) which was their first paring on the screen of both legends. In the1930’s they loved a good mystery story as they also did love the screwball comedy so when paramount combined both and starred a pair together that worked together in the past it was a fun match in heaven.

The Princess Comes Across may be one of the early movies that makes fun of the movies which really is a trait often used by great filmmakers such a Mel brooks among others today. It made fun of thrillers which happens to be one of the biggest draws of that era. It made fun of publicity that the public thrives on too often in the media.

Carole Lombard plays a plays an American who can’t get a job in Hollywood, so she pretends to be a Swedish princess named Princess Olga. Fred MacMurray plays the role of  a popular bandleader who is also on board and takes a shine to the Princess as the princess is indifferent to him until the mystery begins to unfold,

Carole Lombard plays a good that comes off as funny making an impression upon you instantly as she plays up the garbo element of her comedy to a tee. It’s one fun role for her. Fred MacMurray plays a very good role one of his earlier roles on the screen as we see him really making an impression upon us. Douglass Dumbrille plays a very fun role. The rest of the cast really play such very solid roles. It’s very much a funny and fast paced comedy that really does make such fun of many tropes of the time. Its impression of Greta Garbo by carol Carole Lombard really does shine greatly. We have a somewhat fun gem that does try hard to make an impression upon you. It isn’t the best classic in world but a very fun classic to watch time to time.

Lover Come Back review

Rock Hudson and Doris day movies are often called very silly by today’s standard by many people but I just adore watching this movie.

It’s the screwball wit and charm of Doris day that brings the movie to life as she captures wonderfully as an actress what it means to be a screwball on film. She truly has such a charm that really works greatly for you to enjoy her.
I would say Rock Hudson really is another charming lead actor that gives one of those good wonderful roles that he manages to balance out Doris day.

The comic chemistry between Doris Day and Rock Hudson was unique and ranks with other classic pairings such as Cary Grant and Rosalind Russell among other pairings. Tony Randall shines in his his insecure character that is among one of the funniest ever performances on the screen.

The simple story of warring advertising executives works well as a good story that has such comic gold with its story making it among the best of the Doris day and Rock Hudson movies.
All the cast members do just fine in this very bright comedy that has me splitting a gut with laughter every time see this wonderful comic gem.

Lover Come Back is really a delightful and witty romantic comedy that really with such wonderful comic talent really is one of those wonderful little gems that really shines greatly with such wonderful humor making it a comedy to see over and over again.

I truly adore this screwball classic. Cary Grant stars in this classic movie as he truly makes one of his fine performances on the screen.  Its truly one of his finest roles as he is truly a fun actor to watch on the screen.

It’s madcap all right as there is no better people then Grant and Russell, who make a great team together on the screen. It’s truly fine acting by both of the duo as they have great comic timing and wit that brings both their roles to the screen in such a wonderful way. The film’s supporting cast is no less impressive, with every single role cast to perfection as all of them truly shine in their respective roles on the screen. What does it take to be a leading man. You have to have a sense of humor about yourself. Cary Grant truly had an image that was always something truly one of a kind. He was a true movie star. It was always so easy for Cary grant to anything in his moves. I truly want to be like Cary grant but cannot match him sadly. He truly is one of the finest actors all time. So glad to honor him.

The More the Merrier

The More the Merrier:screwball gems review

More-the-Merrier-Poster

So today i review my first screwball gems review. It’s a new feature to talk about screwball comedies. They remain one of my favorite genres to watch often. I would say screwball comedies are some of the best comedy classics ever crafted for the screen. So this new feature is to talk about screwball comedies as i begin with  The More the Merrier which stands as one of the best of the genre all time So to begin my review. The More the Merrier Review(https://www.facebook.com/Wolffianclassicmoviesdigest/)The More the Merrier is a screwball comedy classic that was more of a gem that many overlook today this Oscar nominated classic of many Oscars as it was a widely beloved movie in its time of release in 1943 and a huge box office hit at the time of its release. So much love in its time for this often overlooked classic gem.                                               Charles coburn had been a successful Broadway actor in the period 1910 – 1930s, frequently appearing with his wife in Shakespearean roles then he went to Hollywood to be one of the finer supporting actors of the golden age as he played in The More the Merrier one of his finest roles on the screen as he truly played one fine role of comedy, this is one one fun role that he did such an outstanding job of nailing home this role so its no wonder it won him an Oscar as its an outstanding role. Jean Arthur plays one of her finest comedic roles as she truly makes one laugh with her timing and wit as she also was such a remarkable actress in so many classics. I really admire her role in The More the Merrier as she makes me laugh and also admire her wit as an actress as she shines in this movie. Joel McCrea gives one heck of a performance in The More the Merrier as he truly gives out such a wonderful role in this movie. The acting of everyone else in the cast also shines as its just such a finely acted out movie. George Stevens directs another fine golden age classic which stands among the others he directed as he directed Gunga Din’, ‘Penny Serenade’, ‘Woman of the Year’, ‘A Place in the Sun’, ‘Shane’ and ‘The Diary of Anne Frank’ to his credit. I feel the direction of this movie really shines to show his masterful crafting of directing actors as always he does outstanding direction and craft

A great script is written out in this classic movie. It was nominated for best orginal story by frank ross and Robert Russell as its one truly one greatly crafted out story that has such wit and charm to it. The screenplay writing truly shines in this movie as its such a smartly crafted out script.  Its no wonder it did get nominated for an award for this screenplay as its one of the finest orginal screenplays of the golden age. It’s truly sad this movie is often overlooked for many for many other classic movies of the golden age. A great script, great direction, and great acting. A great look back into life during the war and wonderful romantic story that is one of the best original stories of the golden age makes this movie one of the finest classics of the golden age.
